137 Co-main Event Nick Diaz vs BJ Penn
In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Diaz will not be cut by the UFC. He will fight on the very same card he was cut from less than 24 hours ago, this time vs future hall of famer BJ Penn. Needless to say his pay cut will be quite significant but if he has a really good showing against Penn he may be able to have a shot once again at the title. He will most likely have to win at least one to two more fights against top contenders to do so. His direct path to the title was made null and void by his dodging the press conference for two days in a row.
I don’t think anyone will question that Diaz is a fighter by nature. He is actually very lucky to get back on that card after the top 4 fighters in the co-main events got shuffled around. If there had been a delay of a few months, it would have really let all the talk build about how he was scared to fight GSP. At least this will really make this card much more interesting. There is no question that if he wins this bout with Penn that he will be calling for GSP on the mic with Joe Rogan in the post fight interview but if he loses, he may be back in Strikeforce or worse. This fight is a must win for Diaz. You can only get away with ticking your boss off if you are a huge star and a draw for the organization. Once that is gone so is he.
For Those of you keeping track, here was what the Co-main events looked like 24 hours ago:
Main Event: Georges St-Pierre vs Nick Diaz
Co-Main Event: BJ Penn vs Carlos Condit
Today The four fighters were completely switched around
Main Event: Georges St-Pierre vs Carlos Condit
Co-Main Event: BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz
As I mentioned in a previous post, Dana White is a fan of people who fight like Nick Diaz. I knew that was the only thing that would save Nick after screwing up like this. He cost the organization money as well as credibility. Changing the main event for any pay-per-view for anything other than an injury is completely unacceptable for the organization as well as the fans that pay for the tickets and the pay-per-view. People have been anticipating this fight for a long time now and to have him blow it on something stupid like missing press conferences is unheard of.
Nick Diaz is a hard-nosed fighter that brings it every fight and stands and bangs with his opponents. Just watch Dana White’s Reaction to Diaz’s last fight and tell me he is not a fan of his fighting style:
It should be obvious to anyone at this point that Diaz is going to do it his way even if it takes three times as long to get there. Some people have to do things the hard way and Nick seems like one of those guys.
This is Nick Diaz in 2009 Xterra triathlon riding down “the Plunge” at full speed and bites it hard. If there is any doubt to his toughness, check out this clip where he is riding down a steep hill in Maui Hawaii and falls flat on his chest onto a bunch of rocks. He doesnt even bother to so much as grunt in pain. He just says “its alright, its all good” gets back on his bike and goes for it again.
